Every time I walk through Barneys designer floor I cannot help but delicately & lovingly caress the juxtaposed fabrics & fibers that are interwoven, draped, embellished & disheveled that compile the always extraordinary Rodarte collection.  The way the dresses act as an entity engulfing it’s owner in such a strangely beautiful way….the way the looped & woven sweaters hang upon its’ owner like a blanket that has been passed down through the generations…all in all the pieces exude love, creativity, art.

It is no wonder that the 2 sisters that comprise Rodarte, Kate & Laura Mulleavy, have become an immediate success.  Originally from Pasadena, CA the sisters studied art history & literature, which makes perfect sense because every piece of their collection tells a story & is a piece of art.  The designer line gave birth to its first collection in 2005 & from there exploded into NY Fashion Week, Vogue, WWD & every high-end store around the world from Bergdorfs to Jeffrey to Colette.  Every on trend celebrity from Kirsten Dunst to Natalie Portman adorns herself in their magnificent dresses, sweaters & legging pants.

Needless to say while I am obsessed with Rodarte the $1000+ price tag is a bit of a hindrance, thus when I read in Vogue that the Mulleavy sisters were designing a capsule collection for Target I literally screamed & danced about my room! Literally.

December 20th, 2009 Rodarte for Target hit stores.  The collection is to die for!  Let’s just put it this way I was hoarding sizes & styles in the Target dressing room, haha you can only imagine the strange looks I was receiving from my fellow Alabamian Target shoppers that had no idea what I was so freakin’ excited about!  Here are my favorite purchases…now venture to your closest Target store & be in awe for yourself!

Rodarte for Target Leopard Print Lace Dress in Yellow/Black This dress is unbelievable.  A fitted long sleeve minidress with bows decorating the back (picture to the right) it is absolute perfection for a night out!

Rodarte for Target crepe slip lace dress in oxford tan/ochre This dress is very reminiscent of their designer collections with the layering of fabrics.  Let me just say this dress is not only fabulous & comes in 3 different colors but also is so comfortable!

Over a delicious lunch at Urban Standard in downtown Birmingham, my friend Kelly & I decided a collaboration is in order!  What kind of collaboration you ask?? Well Kelly is a phenomenal photographer & I adore styling, especially when I get to display my own clothing & accessories….thus we decided a photo shoot should be next on our to do list!  Here are the results, enjoy!

Photography by Kelly Merrill Cummings of Spindle Photography, click above for a closer look!

While I am in no way a model, I am quite obsessed with showing off my new fall finds…the first one being my new leather dress by Gestuz from one of my favorite boutiques, Swank 35223.  I’ve decided this dress is the perfect ULBD (updated little black dress).  For a more casual day look, I’ve worn my leather dress with oxford shoes & a cozy Pashmina.  Above Kelly photographed me in a more dressy look complete with an H&M lace top, Topshop over the knee boots, a statement pearl ring & an oversize pink clutch-all important trends this season.  This leather dress is the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe as it is extremely versatile.

My second favorite fall item is my cranberry one-piece jumper by Black Halo from one of my fashion secrets….Gilt Groupe– an online shopping experience complete with discounted designer pieces!  I paired it with my vintage navy Yves Saint Laurent blazer, Topshop gray & pink suede platform heels & statement chandelier earrings-again all important fall trends.  It is perfect for a night out with the girls, a holiday party or a trendy day look!  I even made a new friend in my cranberry jumper…she was quite stylish herself in her pink Coach collar!

My last fall obsession is my Mackage leather & fur jacket from Swank 35223.  Owner of Swank, Emily Dees Boulden got me hooked on this outerwear label a few years ago & I’ve been a dedicated fan ever since; 3 jackets down many more to come!  Paired above with fuchsia (shades of purple are the most important color palette this season) leggings by Splendid (highly recommend this brand, they are insanely comfortable!), a gray Vince turtleneck, brown ballet flats & vintage onyx & pearl earrings.

Red Lipsticks

Red Lipsticks from Top to Bottom: 1. Giorgio Armani Rouge Armani #400; 2. Bobbi Brown Red #10; 3. Chanel Rouge Allure Laque #74; 4. Dior Diorrific Dolce Vita Red; 5. La Praire Rouge Clair; 6. MAC Russian Red; 7. Laura Mercier Healthy Lips Lip Sheer; 8. Trish McEvoy Gorgeous Red; 9. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte #18.

What is my secret ‘pick me up’ for a night out… a strong red lip!  Last week I used this exact trick getting ready for an event & as expected I was immediately infused with confidence & energy.  Once at the event I had numerous women compliment me on my bold choice & then painstakingly tell me they wish they could pull off a red lip but there’s just no way.  That Southern Femmes is a lie.  Skin tone, personal style, confidence & uncertainty on how to apply such a bold color are some of the many excuses I heard as to why these women could not wear red lipstick.  Well I am here to address all of the aforementioned excuses one by one:  A. there is a shade of red for every complexion (see below)  B. again no matter what your personal style you can make red lips work for you, if you are more conservative wear red lipstick in a very Mad Men/Grace Kelly way, if you are more trendy wear it as I did to my event with black leggings, black tunic tee, black leather jacket & colorful stilettos  C. red lipstick=confidence boost, need I say more  D. unsure how to apply/wear a strong hued lipstick, well this is where my friend & makeup guru Chris comes into play…

Applying the rep lipstick

Chris first applied base, concealer & powder followed by a pretty yet relatively subtle eye.  It is best to stick to a more subdued eye when wearing a strong red lipstick for obvious reasons.  Chris chose a bronze eye palette to accentuate my hazel eye color & more olive skin tone.  Once finished with my eyes Chris put concealer around my lips to keep the red lipstick from bleeding, it’s a great trick to get the color to stay on longer!  The next step is lip liner-chose a red close to the shade you are going to wear or even a nude lip liner would work-it just provides a great base for the lipstick.  Lastly, depending on the consistency of the lipstick (Chris used on me a more liquid base Chanel red) you can apply the lipstick right to the lips or if it makes you feel more comfortable use a small brush to apply the lipstick.

Finished Red Lips

Et volia!

FashionWeekend2009 program

Fashion week in New York City is well on its’ way…Bryant Park’s bustling tents, fashionistas posing for the press, the latest songs remixed & pumping  adrenaline throughout the throngs of adoring style mavens as the latest looks for RTW Spring 2010 go swirling by….that’s just  the bare minimum as to why NYC Fashion Week=Fashion Heaven!!!  Sadly, this year I am unable to partake in this glorious NYC event BUT I am oh so pleased to say Alabama has stepped it up in the fashion realm!

Moving back to Alabama I was skeptical of the fashion opportunities available but when asked to assist in styling an upcoming fashion show presented by The Summit (a fabulous outdoor shopping mall for all of you non-Alabamians) benefiting the Junior League of Birmingham I of course accepted!  It would be a highlight of Fall 2009 fashions divided into 4 segments: Autumn Hues, 80’s Revisited, Lady Like Luxe & Evening.  I had the absolute pleasure of working with renowned stylist Jen Rotenstreich on the show.  We focused on looks from Belk although other stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bebe & Anthropologie were featured in the show as well.  After a week of pulling tops, dresses, trousers, skirts, jackets & a variety of accessories to fit each trend our looks were complete & ready for the Saturday night show!

Alden & me at Fashion Weekend

Enjoying our wine & a magnificent view of Birmingham at sunset.  I’m wearing a Patricia Field mini dress, Forever 21 ‘shredded’ leggings, TopShop booties, a vintage pearl ring & my Chanel bag.  Alden is wearing a printed BCBG jersey dress, Banana Republic short sleeve sweater & J.Crew two tone pumps.

Southern Femmes of Fashion Weekend

My Southern Femme fashionistas of the night: Carissa (left) wearing a black strapless belted H&M dress made fallish & fabulous with a red plaid H&M scarf & my top pick for fall- booties!  Mallory (right) is adorned in a more classic version of the mini dress+booties look that is such an important trend this fall!  She complements her asymmetrical neckline (big trend!) black ruffled dress from Target with gray booties & pearls.

Upon arriving at the rooftop venue overlooking the beautiful city of Birmingham at twilight I was already impressed by the red carpet, the stunning floral arrangements & the photographer greeting us ready to snap our picture.  Before the show began wine & hors d’oeuvres were offered while Birmingham’s best dressed mingled under a billowy white tent.  Walking into the fashion show tent if I didn’t already feel like I was immersed in NYC Fashion Week I definitely did once the show started!  Music booming, lights strobing, VIP seats, kick ass swag bags…the show was underway!

swag bags

The first segment was Autumn Hues focusing on one of the most important color palettes for fall-an array of chocolate, burnt orange, taupe, caramel & everything in between.  We also wanted to showcase different fabrics & textures to create a rich fall look….

The second segment was 80’s Revisited full of lace, grommets & zippers, sequins & vibrant neon colors!  Purple being a strong color for fall we made sure to pop that color on the runway in the form of an origami mini dress!  Layer on those accessories too for added edge & style….

The third segment was Lady Like Luxe channeling Mad Men, Jackie O & Grace Kelly.  We opted for chic & richly colored sheath dresses paired with fitted jackets, tweed trousers & fur jackets, pretty much anything feminine, luxurious & updated classic…

Bottega Veneta smokey eye

Whether you’re headin’ to a dinner party or a night out with the girls mesmerize your company with a striking smoky eye!  I was inspired by the makeup at the Bottega Veneta Fall 2009 Collection where the models (see pictures above) looked classy & chic in their lush dresses, statement jewelry & the final touch- an enticing smoky eye!

My friend Chris, the best makeup artist I know, offered to demonstrate this great look for night step by step…so watch the ‘fabulousity’ progress below!

Step 1-base on the eye

Step 1: On a clean face (haha yes I’m exposing myself sans makeup!) cover the entire lid with a nude cream shadow.  This helps the smoky eye stay put all night long!

Step 2-caviar on the eye lid

Step 2: Using a black shadow, liner or something similar line the entire eye lid.  Chris used Caviar by Laura Mercier on me-it’s a mix between a cream & a shadow so it wears well but also gives you that sexy smudged look!

Step 3-medium shadow

Step 3: Gradation time!  You’ve covered your lid in black, now use a brown, bronze, wine or other dark color shadow in the crease of your lid & blend!  Then use a lighter highlighter eye shadow across the brow bone to illuminate.

Step 4-line the lower lash

Step 4: Now it’s time to pay attention to your lower lash line…Line it with the same black shadow or liner that you used to cover your eye lid.  Line the entire eye & smudge again!  For a final touch apply a few layers of mascara on your upper eyelashes.

C'est fini!

Step 5: After completing your smoky eye it’s time to focus on the rest of the face!  Since you are doing a strong eye you want to keep the rest of the face relatively simple, it’s all about balance!  Chris used Laura Mercier’s mineral powder, bronzer & blush to give me a healthy glow…..Thank you Chris I feel sooooo chic & ready for a night out!

Central Park, New York City                              Farmland in Sardis, Alabama

My southern roots are stronger than I ever fully grasped, so powerful that they’ve taken me back to the Heart of Dixie.  The land of southern hospitality, down home country cookin’, rolling farmland & cascading mountains & most importantly my family & friends.  New York City was an amazing experience full of fast paced city & fashion adventures but when it comes down to it I’ll always be a southern femme.  But the fashion will continue despite my move because everyone knows a southern girl always wants to look & dress her best!

My last weekend in NYC was a dramatic change from my first weekend back in Alabama: big city partying & shopping to my friend’s farmhouse in south Alabama.  I’d like to share these monumental moments with y’all….from running into celebrities & parties at MOMA to good friends & farmhouses!

Me at the MOMA party

My last weekend in NYC was made complete with my best friend Blake arriving to help me go out with a bang!  We were lucky enough to attend the ‘Cezanne to Picasso’ opening party at MOMA where we mingled in the gardens before admiring the phenomenal works of Cezanne, Picasso, Rothko, Pollock & more!

I wore a beaded caftan from Intermix over a royal blue vintage slip, paired with my Chloe heels & vintage Celine bag.

Blake at MOMA & detail

Blake looked quite dapper in his vintage Dior blazer, American Apparel vibrant blue t-shirt, plaid shorts & his NYC purchase-a floral Billy Reid pocket square.

Penn Badgley

A last weekend in NYC would not be complete without a few celebrity sightings!  And who better to see than Gossip Girl star, Penn Badgley aka Dan Humphrey!  Walking through Gramercy Park wearing an off white v-neck tee, navy shorts & Toms shoes he was looking much better than his character Dan I have to say!

Rebecca Weinberg

My time in NYC was made complete when I had the opportunity to meet the phenomenal stylist, Rebecca Weinberg on my last day in NYC!  She is a good friend of my former boss Paul Pelssers not to mention the Costume Designer of my favorite TV show “Sex and the City”!  She & her precious dog posed for a picture on 5th Ave looking oh so fabulous in her sunflower yellow rounded sunglasses!

Central Park Picnic

Instead of a final dinner à la Sex and the City (episode where Carrie is leaving NYC to move to Paris), my friends threw me a farewell picnic in Central Park!  It was the most magical day in NYC full of wonderful friends, beautiful scenery & great southern food like tomato pie, biscuits, fried chicken & even sweet tea flavored vodka drinks!

Marys House, Sardis Alabama

For my first weekend back in Alabama my friends & I loaded up the car & headed further south to my friend’s farmhouse in Sardis, Alabama.  It was an ideal southern weekend full of good friends, comfort food, swimming holes & huge front porches perfect for watching the sunset over the rolling soybean & cotton fields.

(side note: we did not stay at Mary’s house pictured above; it is actually a historic home that is being rebuilt by a man in Sardis)
